Free Coffee at Subway

Subway is offering free coffee on Mondays in January. So there are four more Mondays to get your free cup of java jolt - just make sure you get it by 11 am. Seems like this offer is restricted to New York tri-state area.

Thanks to Living Rich With Coupons for the heads up!

Another Starbucks Deal of the Day

Tomorrow, December 21st, and Wednesday, December 22nd, Starbucks is offering a $5 gift card with the purchase of its 12-pack VIA coffee. It's a repeat of the December 9th offer which was a part of Starbucks' 12 days of sharing campaign. Thanks to the gift card, it will be like getting a 45% to 50% discount (depending on the variety of VIA you buy).

I will be running out of coffee this week, so I am wondering if I should take advantage of this offer.

Things To Do When Your Handbag Is Stolen

If you're a woman, have you checked your purse lately? Or shall we say your handbag?

Mine is stuffed with credit cards, driver's license, transit card, shopping rewards cards, keys (to anything that has a keyhole in my house), receipts, a notepad, coupons, pens (in as many colors as in a rainbow), make-up and stuff I don't know about!

In short, my handbag could be the gateway to identity theft.

It's Christmas and thefts are common during the shopping frenzy at this time of the year. It happened to a friend of mine two years ago - yes, around Christmas and at a department store. Absentminded, she kept her bag on a couch and went to take a look at a pair of shoes. Within a few minutes, she realized her shoulder wasn't feeling the weight of her immense handbag. Her heart pulsating, she turned around to grab her bag. It was gone.

Her first thought was not for the wad of hard-earned cash in that bag but that she would now be a victim of identity theft - for the rest of her life.

During a panic-stricken half hour, she asked fellow shoppers around if they had seen a large red handbag, requested the harried salespeople to see if a Samaritan had returned any bag and listened to a few sympathizers who said that the bag was perhaps "lost" for good.

When she calmed down, she took the following actions in the next 24 hours. Turns out, she was quite methodical about it.

File a police report
My friend called the police while at the department store. A friendly cop came, shrugged and said that such petty thefts were common during the holidays. He added that in most cases, the thieves are only interested in the cash and would in all probability trash the rest.
The cop asked my friend to make a list of all the items in the bag and told her to come back the next day for an official police report.

Call the credit card companies
My friend took no chances. She called the credit card companies to report the stolen cards - all of them were swift to respond and replaced the canceled cards within a week or two.

Call the credit bureaus
My friend also called all the three credit bureaus - TransUnion, Experian and Equifax - to place a fraud alert for 90 days. By law, she only had to call one of them but why take a chance? It was just two more calls.

Get a new driver's license
Getting a driver's license was the biggest hassle. It basically meant spending half a day or more standing in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles along with the official police report and identity documents.

What steps could you take to save yourself some pain?
Have a copy of credit card statement handy either online or in a drawer. You will need that information to cancel your cards. Mighty Bargain Hunter has more ideas. Also take a look at how he handled the situation when his wife's wallet was stolen.

Did you have a similar experience? What did you do?

Starbucks Deal of the Day - December 12th

Tomorrow is the last day for Starbucks' 12 Days of Sharing campaign. And my guesses on what would be the final day's offer were wrong. :-(

Instead, Starbucks is offering a mug for $6.99, a 30% discount.

I have taken advantage of just one offer - the $5 Starbucks card for my coffee purchase on December 6th will pay for my next Frappuccino indulgence trip!

Starbucks Deal of the Day - December 11th

Just two days left for Starbucks 12 Days of Sharing campaign. If you've hesitated to get a deal, here's another chance. Today's offer is the one pound of Christmas blend or any 12-pack of VIA for $7.95. This is not as great as the December 2nd or the December 6th offers on one-pound coffee purchases.

I have just started using the coffee I bought on December 6th, so I will skip this offer. What will be the final Starbucks Deal of the Day? I think it will be another BOGO deals or a rewards card-related offer.

Starbucks Deal of the Day - December 9th

For instant coffee lovers, Starbucks is offering a $5 gift card with the purchase of its 12-pack VIA coffee tomorrow as part of its 12 Days of Sharing campaign. So it will feel like you're getting a 45% to 50% discount (depending on what variety of VIA you buy).

Once again, I will skip this offer. Funny, I used to have Nescafé instant coffee with my family - a winter tradition. After coming to the US and getting a taste of freshly-brewed coffee, I am having a hard time getting back to instant coffee.

Starbucks Deal of the Day - December 8th

Last night, Starbucks announced the eighth offer as part of its 12 Days of Sharing campaign. If you are in need of a tumbler or a mug, then get the Red Cup tumbler for $6.99 (36% discount) or the Red Cup mug for $3.99 (50% discount).

I have way too many mugs - so I am not going for this offer.

Starbucks Deal of the Day

Have you been taking advantage of Starbucks' 12 Days of Sharing? Yesterday, I bought a pound of coffee and added $5 to my Starbucks rewards card as part of their Day 6 deal. The coffee beans cost $10.95 so it seems like I got a 46% discount! And to further justify this expense, I have quite run out of coffee.

I could have gone for the December 2nd deal but waited and then found this cheaper deal.

Today, December 7th, Starbucks is offerings its VIA flavored coffee for free with the purchase of a 16-oz tumbler.

All About Swag Bucks

By now, Wealthy Immigrant readers have noticed the Swag Bucks ad to search and win prizes :-)

I have been a member for about a year now and so feel confident to make a pitch. If you don't already know about it, Swag Bucks encourages you to search on its site or toolbar and earn, yes, Swag Bucks. With these Swag Bucks, you can redeem gifts cards such as Starbucks and Amazon or even cash (via Paypal). But the Swag Bucks value attributed to the goodies are odd. For example, 450 Swag Bucks will get you an Amazon card worth $5 but 3150 Swag Bucks gets you an Amazon card for $25. If you do the math, it's more expensive to wait and earn the $25 Amazon card.

There are other ways to earn Swag Bucks, from taking a poll daily to hunting down codes on their Facebook Page and Twitter.

If you have questions, let me know. And if you want to give it a try, Swag Bucks starts you off with 30 Swag Bucks! Of course, you can promote (like Wealthy Immigrant!) and earn more Swag Bucks. And no, I haven't noticed additional spam in my inbox.

Buying Eyeglasses Online

Due for an eye checkup or want a new pair of eyeglasses? If you're a typical Wealthy Immigrant reader, then you are already looking for eyeglasses online. The Digerati Life has a list of online shopping sites to purchase eyeglasses.

But most sites might not accept your health insurance if you have one. For example, as of November 2010, FramesDirect.com doesn't accept insurance.

ING Direct Black Friday Offer - A Deal?

So I checked out ING Direct Black Friday Sale.

First, I was wrong - there is nothing for savers unless you consider the 36-month IRA CD at 2 percent a "deal."

In fact, ING Direct is promoting spending - like shopping, buying a home or trading to get the "savings."

OK, I am disappointed.

Housing Help

It's tough times - and even more so for those who have lost their homes or are in danger of becoming homeless. The New York Times profiled a woman, Joan McAllister, who publishes a newsletter for families who live in New York City's shelters. A relative of Ms. McAllister maintains a website, aptly called There’s No Place Like Home.

The website has useful information on food pantries, free trainings and even articles by people living in the shelters.

Black Friday "Sale" with ING Direct

Like last year, ING Direct will have a Black Friday Sale from November 26th to November 28th. I think the CD rates could be .05% to .10% better than their current rates.
